About Course

Master the scientific foundations of acne scar assessment through this comprehensive CPD Level 7 module designed for medical professionals.

This module provides the theoretical knowledge required before undertaking clinical scar treatments, covering the biology of scar formation, wound healing, collagen remodelling, and evidence-based treatment planning.

Throughout the course you will learn:

  • Classification of atrophic acne scars.
  • Wound healing and collagen remodelling.
  • Patient assessment and consultation.
  • Treatment planning and clinical decision making.
  • Indications and contraindications.
  • Expected treatment outcomes.

Every lesson is designed to build the clinical knowledge required before progressing to practical scar management techniques.

Upon successful completion, learners will have a thorough understanding of the principles that underpin modern acne scar treatment.

Course Content

Treatment of Atrophic Scars
Build the essential knowledge required to understand atrophic acne scars, their classification, and the evidence-based treatment principles used before any practical procedures are performed.

1. Module One
In this module, you will learn how to identify and assess the different types of atrophic acne scars, including ice pick, boxcar, rolling and tethered scars, and understand why accurate scar classification is essential for successful treatment planning. You will explore both destructive and non-destructive treatment options, with a particular focus on modern collagen-stimulating therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and fractional laser treatments. The module explains the biological principles behind scar remodelling, collagen production and platelet activation, while also demonstrating how to clinically assess scars using techniques such as skin stretching to identify tethering. In the practical component, you will learn how to safely collect venous blood, prepare platelet-rich plasma through a two-stage centrifugation process, and understand how PRP is prepared and delivered to patients as part of an evidence-based approach to improving atrophic acne scarring.
