ENERPEEL® PYRUVIC ACID (PA)
EnerPeel® Pyruvic Acid (PA)
SkinMed® EnerPeel® Pyruvic (PA) utilises a patented carrier technology, to transport 50% Pyruvic Acid, which has a lower pKa than Glycolic Acid. (more remodelling ability) It is an Alpha Keto acid, and pentetrates lipids and oils and a medium deep remodelling agent with a sebostatic effect and hence is used in seborrhea and for reducing superficial acne scars.

Understanding Anti-Ageing
‘Ageing’ can mean many things. We focus on optimising fibroblast performance and health; These are the cells in the dermis that produce fibres of collagen, elastin for structural integrity and elasticity, while also producing hyaluronic acid which as a long chain sugar absorbs and holds water in a jelly like mass keeping the skin taught and the fibres in place. With anti-ageing, there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all, therefore a flexible protocol that can be tailored to each individual’s skin is needed for success in targeting the keys signs of ageing.
The science
SkinMed® EnerPeel® PA remodelling impact is just below a 25% SkinMed® Enerpeel® TCA, but with a greater safety profile. As a keto acid, it has a sebum slowing effect like the beta hydroxyl acid Salicylic Acid, but it penetrates much deeper than SkinMed® EnerPeel® SA. It can be also used in conjunction with SkinMed® EnerPeel® JR for a deeper peel especially when sun damage combined with lines and wrinkles are the joint targets.

EnerPeel®: Patented Carrier Technology
EnerPeel® uses a patented carrier solution which restrains the activity of the acid until it is absorbed. This is not buffering the acid and thereby reducing its activity; it is restraining it and then releasing it to accelerate through the skin. EnerPeel®s carrier system enhances its activity for uniform and enhanced absorption of the active ingredients; with two to three times improved skin penetration.
The Result
Enerpeel® PA is a version of the frequently used pyruvic acid chemical peel in a patented Enerpeel® skin remodelling solution. It is commonly used to treat a wide range of skin issues, including fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation issues as well as oily skin. As it is contained in an Enerpeel® solution, any redness and erythema are much less in severity and duration, compared to many other chemical peels.

Using the EnerPeel® PA
Application details
Enerpeel® Pyruvic Acid should always be neutralised and not extended, it is too powerful a peel to be extended. Normally a layer is applied for 1 to 3 minutes. If frosting is seen during this time then neutralisation should be carried out immediately. If no frosting and discomfort scores are low (below 5/10) then the clinician may decide to apply another layer at three minutes and leave this for up to another two minutes and then neutralise. This doubling of the solution volume will increase discomfort scores and can lead to frosting, although the Enerpeel® carrier system reduces this. If discomfort scores reach 7 or 8 during this 2 minutes then we recommend immediate neutralisation. The two layer technique increases results considerably but also increases post procedural downtime and PIH risk.
EnerPeel® PA is recommended with the following protocols:
Anti-Ageing Protocol
EnerPeel® PA works synergistically alongside our all-encompassing Anti-ageing TripleLock® products to promote a revision and renewal of the collagen and elastin matrix to tighten up skin, reduce wrinkles and lines. The TripleLock® products complete the anti-ageing protocol, boosting Hyaluronic Acid levels in the skin, enhancing new structural fibre production, and supplementing epidermal skin lipids.
Pigmentation Protocol
EnerPeel® PA reduces fixed and trapped pigment and also slows down pigment production and is especially useful in lighter and moderate skin types. Caution should be observed in darker skin types as the power of EnerPeel® PA could trigger increased pigment production. So, it is a balancing act, but combined with TripleLock® products on pigmentation completes the pigmentation protocol, and is based on removing the inflammatory stimulus, normalising melanin production, and creating a healthy skin environment.
Acne Protocol
EnerPeel® PA has oil slowing capability and in lighter skin types with a low pigmentation risk can be very effective at reducing acne scarring and works synergistically alongside our all-encompassing Acne TripleLock® products to create the complete protocol. EnerPeel® SA targets infected and inflamed spots more effectively but once these are under control, switching to an EnerPeel® PA or an EnerPeel® JR can help to clear up post spot oiliness and pigmented marks left by spots.
Top Tip
Another popular combination amongst nurses is to apply Jessners and then the Pyruvic on top as a great skin revising treatment which again can lead to medium depth impact. If there is a PIH or erythema risk, consider EnerPeel® MA as an alternative to PA.
